Vegetarian
and Organic Resources in Singapore
Visiting
yogis and friends often ask where to find good vegetarian food while
they are in town. In response, I've compiled a list of eating places
that I've been to and enjoyed. Its in no particular order or preference
and is definitely not comprehensive! I'll continue to grow the list,
and would be happy to receive suggestions or feedback from you as
well. Just send them to orders@gajahgoogoo.com.
I'll
start on the organic store list soon...
The
Soup Spoon
Not fully vegetarian, but it offers a wide selection of hearty vegetarian
soups salads and sandwiches. A regular soup costs about S$5 while
the SouperValue Combo Meal which includes a soup, choice of either
a salad or sandwich AND choice of either a pack of chips or apple
AND a yummy chocolate costs between $7 to $10.

Lotus
Vegetarian Restaurant
Great value for money vegetarian buffet. The theme changes constantly
but you’ll always get a wide variety of dishes such as Japanese
sushi, spaghetti, pizza, tim sum, taiwanese cuisine, pepper steak
and pork chop… all vegetarian of course! An ala carte menu
is also available. Lunch is about $13.20++ while dinner costs about
$18.80++

Original

and a good value lunch set on weekdays. Also good juices and smoothies.
Budget about $20 – 30 per head without alchohol.

The
Whole Earth Vegetarian Restaurant
The only vegetarian
Peranakan (Straits Chinese) & Thai restaurant in town! Local
Peranakan food is very meat based, but somehow the restaurant manages
to retain the authentic taste of the original dishes without a jot
of meat. Bibik’s Buah Keluak and Olive Leaf Rice are yummy.
Not that cheap, but very special. Located in the very atmospheric
Geylang Road, at the edge of the (very safe) red light district.

Cedele
Bakery Depot
Originally a bakery, Cedele now offers quite a wide selection of
salads, gluten-free soups, sandwiches, entrees, breads and desserts.
While it isn’t wholly vegetarian, there are a number of vegetarian
options and the emphasis is on healthy ingredients and organic ingredients
where available. I like their Shan tofu salad and tofu burger. They
also offer a range of eggless ice creams, soy coffees and herbal
teas.

Sunflower
Vegetarian
It’s a hole in the wall in an old shopping centre, but offers
a tasty range of simple vegetarian food. You can select a pasta
or wonton laksa from the menu, or select a few side dishes to go
with brown rice or their special green noodles (made with homemade
spinach oil). Your meal will cost under $10.

Lingzhi
If you are looking for Chinese Vegetarian Fine Dining, Lingzhi is
the place to go. They offer a range of delicious vegetarian dim
sum, as well as a buffet lunch or dinner for $18.80 and $23.80 respectively
(with a minimum of 4 diners) at Liat Towers. There is a different
menu (hot pot I believe) offered at their Far Easrt Square outlet).
Otherwise a meal without drinks would cost about $20 per head. Its
part of the Tung Lok group of restaurants.

Yogi
Hub
A very popular organic / vegetarian restaurant that’s moderately
priced and cosy. The food is light, tasty and healthy, though portions
are a little small. Their gado gado (an Indonesian raw salad) and
bubor cha cha are particularly good.

INDIAN
VEGETARIAN
Throw a stone anywhere in Little India and you are likely to hit
a good Indian restaurant. The vegetarian will certainly not starve
here, not with the abundance of dosas, idlis, pooris, thalis, chaats
and chappatis available. These are some of our favourites:
Anandabhavan
All the outlets are good: Syed Alwi is modern and offers the widest
menu with fusion options.

one of the best. You can't go wrong with a thali, washed down with
filter coffee.

Raj
A branch of Raj Restaurant in Calcutta, this is a relatively upmarket
restaurant (but with delightfully reasonable prices) serving vegetarian
north and south Indian food. The Little India outlet is better –
the one at Biopolis has a more limited menu and is less generous
with servings.
