Going
Gaga Over Yoga Rugs
Tired of using
synthetic sticky mats for yoga? Experience the simple pleasure of
practicing yoga on hand-woven cotton rugs. Cotton mysore rugs have
been used in India for yoga for centuries, and now Singapore has
her own mysore rug company with the launch of Gajahgoogoo Yoga Essentials.
Kathleen Tan,
proprietress of Gajahgoogoo, tells us what made her start the brand.
“Cotton mysore rugs are perfect for yoga because they are
specially woven to absorb moisture when you perspire and, unlike
sticky mats, they give excellent grip even when wet. They also provide
a gentle cushioning and natural texture that makes using them really
enjoyable. I wanted a rug that was machine washable, well-made and
reasonably priced. When I couldn’t find what I wanted on the
market, I went to India to search for weavers who could make them
to my specifications.”
Singapore’s
proximity to India made it possible to keep costs low and Kathleen
intends to pass on these cost savings to her customers. “The
point is really to make these great rugs available at a reasonable
price to yogis in Singapore and worldwide. It’s not just a
business; it’s my small contribution to the yoga community.”
Gajahgoogoo
mysore yoga rugs combine traditional Indian handloom techniques,
modern technology and Kathleen’s original designs to create
a range of unique rugs that are comfortable, attractive and low
maintenance.
For the frequent
traveler, Gajahgoogoo also has an innovative version of the mysore
yoga rug that does away with the need for a sticky mat altogether.
It features a 100% rubber non-slip backing that allows the rug to
be used on most surfaces – from hotel room carpets to wooden
floors.
Gajahgoogoo
looks set to make a splash in the yoga accessory market. Since the
soft launch of the brand, the rugs have been well received by yoga
teachers and students in Singapore, and have even found fans in
the USA, Australia and Hong Kong. Gajahgoogoo also carries a select
range of hard-to-find ashtanga yoga books, DVDs and accessories,
and are also working on an essential yogawear range that, like their
rugs, will deliver quality at a reasonable price.”
Gajahgoogoo
mysore yoga rugs are available at leading yoga schools and can be
ordered online at www.gajahgoogoo.com.
